Stage One: Self-Avoidance

How to Stop Tiptoeing Around Self-Avoidance: The Smallest Step Rule

When you're in the Self-Avoidance Stage, your brain sees your next passion project (like starting a business, painting that canvas, or launching a new fitness routine) as a massive, overwhelming threat. Your core strength, the ability to be creative, gets hijacked, turning excitement into scattered, untethered energy.

The temptation is to research for 10 more hours, plan for a week, or clean your whole house instead. These are forms of avoidance that make you feel productive but keep you tiptoeing around the actual step that brings joy.

But when self-avoidance kicks in, the goal isn't progress... it's proof.

The Smallest Step Rule works by finding the single, tiniest action related to your goal that feels so easy it is impossible to fail. By completing this micro-task, you prove to your brain's safety center that this pursuit is not a threat.

Instead of planning the whole project, commit to writing the title of your outline. If you're starting a business, skip the full business plan and commit to designing the logo font. If you want to start painting, forget finishing the whole canvas and just clean your brushes and lay out two specific colors. If your goal is a new wellness routine, don't worry about the 30-minute workout, just put on your running shoes for 30 seconds. If you're writing a book, skip the first chapter draft and just write the three bullet points for the introduction.

The result? You transform that scattered, untethered energy into focused, confident action, bit by bit. Take the smallest step today to prove to your brain that it is safe to move forward and create what you want without catastrophic risk.

The Story Behind the Four Stages of Self

Whether it was the CEO in my office, the internationally acclaimed women standing in front of my camera, or the hundreds of women interviewed as part of the Courage1000 Project, I witnessed a universal cycle. No matter how successful the woman was or what external milestone she achieved, inevitably, the true barrier to creating a life she loved wasn't outside failure; it's the internal friction that makes us hesitate moving forward. Despite their accolades, these women still felt the self-doubt, the worthiness struggles, and the bone-deep exhaustion when they tiptoed around their passions and purpose.

I saw it so clearly in others, because it was like looking in a mirror. I knew this required more than motivation; it required a clear roadmap to move through the heaviness without adding to the burden that was already causing us to hesitate.

My desire to solve this ignited a ten-year deep dive into Depth Psychology and the science of self-mastery. I studied the greats, including Carl Jung, Brené Brown, Abraham Maslow, and Dr Aaron Beck.

The culmination of my research showed me one fundamental truth: These repeating cycles of tiptoeing are normal. The self-help world often treats this cycle as a problem to fix, making you feel inherently wrong and adding more weight to the heaviness you already experience. My proprietary method: The Four Stages of Self, is different. We start by normalizing your experience.

This unique, evidence-based roadmap is the clear, simple solution that shows heart-led women how to pursue their wants, needs, desires, and dreams without sacrificing their well-being in the process. By first showing them how normal their cycles of hesitation truly are, they begin to see a path through the guilt, self-doubt, and internal chaos that is preventing them from creating a life they love.

But this framework is not just something I teach, it is the core tool I use to navigate my own life, purpose, and multiple passions every single day. The Four Stages of Self provides the practical structure we need to move through the universal friction of our lives, no matter what area is asking for attention. This didn't just change my life; it changed the lives of the hundreds of women I first shared it with, and that movement is growing daily.

Are you ready to finally stop tiptoeing around your heart?
